The happiest people are the givers, not the takers.

Our happiness is directly related to the happiness of those around others. When we see other people happy, we feel happy too. And, that happiness is even more genuine and generous when the reason behind their happiness is you. If you are able to make someone happier by giving them something, whether it is your time, money, lunch, coffee, gift, or just about anything, it doesn’t only contribute to that person’s happiness but yours as well. When we were young, we loved to gather things, collect stuff and enjoyed getting gifts. However, as you grow up, you learn that when you get something, the happiness or the euphoria of getting something lasts only for a few minutes to a few days.

When you give something to someone, it is a genuine feeling of happiness that continues to make you feel good whenever you think about it and see that person happy. Just because you read this article doesn’t mean that you should start giving right away. No, it doesn’t work like that. You need to understand that there is a difference between giving and meaningful giving. You have to make sure that what you give helps others. Haven’t you heard that phrase earlier that says, “it’s the thought behind the gift that counts’?

Similarly, you have to make sure that your giving is thoughtful and meaningful. If there are things in your house, the old clothes that you don’t wear anymore, utensils that you don’t use anymore, and so on, which you can donate or give away to the homeless. Many people throw the old stuff away or simply sell it for pennies. Instead, you can find underprivileged people and shelters which take care of them and give away your stuff there. An old radio that you don’t use anymore can light up the life of an old grandpa who sits alone all day by himself in an old age home. When you see the smile in the faces of those people as you give away stuff that doesn’t mean anything to you, it will light up your heart and melt it at the same time. There aren’t many occasions in life when you feel that good. Try it sometimes, and you’ll know what I am talking about.

Do remember that when you engage in giving to achieve something or to fulfill any malicious intentions or to gain something, it isn’t going to make you feel anything close to what we mentioned above. Any act of giving that is covered with greed, and a negative intention is not going to give you a feeling of satisfaction. It is because there would always be hidden guilt in your consciousness that knows why you’ve given something. When you give without expectation, but just for the feeling of joy and happiness of giving and seeing other people smile, it is the feeling of pure bliss.

When you give something to someone and make a difference in their lives or even a single day of their life, it makes a positive difference in their lives as well as yours. It is the feeling of positivity associated with giving that helps you feel better about yourself and, most of all, keep negativity at bay. It brings harmony in your life, your thoughts, and your actions. Life is a boomerang, and you get what you give, but you shouldn’t give with the expectation of receiving. However, the universe blesses the people who are able to make a positive difference to make the world a better place, regardless of how small the contribution is. It is because the act of giving is not only about materialistic things and money but also about love, compassion, respect, time, and empathy. Make someone smile today with purity in your heart and see how it feels.
